Post your flight plans here.
Look over these sections in Book 2:
Travelling
Starship Economics (skip starship purchase)
look over tables on p.11
you can skip p. 12-45
look at Trade and Commerce.
The gist is, you can move up to two hexes per jump. You will then need to refuel. Look at gthe sectro data for Pax Rulin. It will tell you what trade types it has (see the bottom of p. 46) which tells you what might be bought low here. Roll it out. Then look at the planets that are in jump range, and see what they might pay extra for. Fill up with cargo and maybe passengers, then jump!
Pretty soon, I bet Qunedalon or Oban, who have done this before, will post and show you flatlanders how it's done.
Parcellus will roll for trade goods and determine my destination from there. Then roll for passengers and if there is room left in cargo hold, for cargo.
6,2
Apparently after scouring the market mechanical parts are the best deal out there. Parcellus wants to get jumping, so he does not wait another week to try rolling again for another less-costly good.
3
There are 15 tons available, and he has 1,100,000 Cr to gamble, so he rolls to see what price he can purchase them at.
6
The price will be 90% of the base price, so Parcellus can afford to buy all 15 tons for (70,000 * .9) * 15 = $945,000
Looks like he is heading to Berengaria, where he will have a big bonus to selling mechanical parts.
He checks for cargo jobs; he has 46 tons remaining of cargo space.
5,2
There are 10 major and 8 minor cargo jobs available (note this is due to the 7-step difference in tech level between Berengaria and Pax Rulin: making the reverse trip will hurt…). The sizes are respectively: 30, 40, 20, 20, 50, 20, 60, 50, 60, 60 and 10, 25, 30, 10, 15, 25, 5, 25. Parcellus accepts the contract to transport the largest, 40-ton job and the smallest 5-ton job.
6,(-5), 6, 10
There are 8 high passage, 13 middle, and 17 low passage contracts. Parcellus elects to take on a full complement of 7 high passengers and four low.
He leaves immediately.
Expected revenue for the Jump-1 to Berengaria is 70,000 + 4,000 + 45,000 + any profit cleared from selling the mechanical parts.
IO - what do I do next? At this point Parcellus is just trying to build capital and hoping for a few good cargo rolls.
Parcellus will roll for trade goods …
Excellent! Thanks, Oban, for showing the newbies how we roll. There is no xp to offer, but you defintely do not lick vargr balls.

Now I have to determine if anything happens on the the way to Berengaria and resolve anything unusual by 12/19!
BTW, please note all that you have no weapons whatsoever and are easy prey for any pirates or furrin revenooers who can catch you. You can sink a mess of your cash into buying turrets and weapons per Book 2, but now you have only a couple of hardpoints — places on the ship to put turrets.
Single Turret 200,000
Double Turret 500,000
Triple Turret 1,000,000
Pulse Laser 500,000
Beam Laser 1,000,000
Missile Rack 750,000
Sandcaster 250,000
If you blow nearly your whole million credit cash loan, you could install …
1 single turret with a pulse laser 700K
1 double turret with 2 sandcasters 1Mcr
1 triple turret with no weapons
1 single turret with a missile rack (missiles sold separately) 950K
etc.
Better than nothing? Maybe. Being a captain is tough!

Luckily, the Imperial Navy (or counterparts elsewhere) and local fleets patrol the space lanes, especially in high-traffic areas. The Starship Encounter table gives no pirate encounters in systems with A and B class spaceports. Naturally the GM can override this, but if we're going purely by book tables, ships should be safe if they stick to the main space lanes.
Also:
Though Oban rolled for what was available on Pax Rulin, I think we can let everyone roll independently for the starting stuff, since people will probably head off in different directions.
If i were a captain, I might look into tearing off to collect those 1 million Cr prizes as fast as I can … maybe by jumping to Rhysk or Perrior, Islent, Belt-9, Corben, etc.
…though Rhysk is a Red Zone and Islent an Amber Zone…
It looks like the given sector info uses trade classifications beyond Book 2 and 3. For now, please ignore any trade classifications that are not accounted for in Book 2 or 3.
I'm going to hold off for just a little bit while I watch other people play, if that's okay. I'm a bit strapped for time with finals and won't have a chance to read up and figure out how this works until they're over. I'll join you all soon!
io,
1) The Empress Marava notes suggest we have turrets. Please confirm that we need to buy these per your earlier post. also, can we spend money on defensive weapons in advance of the game clock or would you prefer to do that one-on-one?
2) I'm a bit confused on Brokering. I picked up Broker in Scouts. Can i be my own agent sans commission? And it would look as though i could use my 2 Liaison for a 1 bump in brokering.
There is no xp to offer, but you defintely do not lick vargr balls.
Feel free to grant me a mysterious passenger willing to pay a large transport fee. Or a cash bonus for leaving first. Or a DM for my first trade to help it make a profit!
Alternatively, what sort of payment would Parcellus earn for the vargr balls thing?…

I figured the roll would represent what my crew was able to find and decide was worth pursuing after a week of checking around. That each player would make a separate roll even when collocated to prevent having to coordinate. As we scatter, maybe you will take over determining what is in each port-o-call?
I prefer the LBB one-speculative trade per week rule over the later multiple-speculative cargo options I see in Mongoose because it streamlines choices a lot and prevents players from having to create elaborate commodity-tracking spreadsheets…

The Empress comes with two hardpoints where one may attach an turret, but no turrets or weapons installed. Go ahead and spend money in advance of starting play.

Yes, you can be your own broker with bonus! Sounds like a self-help book.

I'm looking forward to a random encounter that causes us to discover the truth in play. Or am I?

It may be interesting if you cross paths out there to scramble for the best/only opportunities available, but I agree that that's an unnecessary fuss at least early on.

Yes, let's go simple.
